Geoffrey Johnson is the kind of artist who posses the magical talent to create something so eerily beautiful and intoxicating out of so few lines and shapes and shades. I love the monochromatic tones he chooses and the starkly dark figures… oh so beautiful.
His artist statement says it perfectly: “A fascination with both the human figure and the powerful architecture of a modern city play a large role in his oils. Through a feeling of anonymity, figures become suggestive shapes and the skyline of New York materializes mysteriously in the background. “
Notice the subtle shades and shapes that create an entire city in the scenes. Subtle shade variations and contrast are so very important when an artist is not using very much color. Geoffrey clearly paid great attention to that in his paintings, and it paid off. They are stunning.
Happy Thursday!
