I stumbled upon Joshua Flint’s work while browsing through the websites of galleries in Charleston, SC (we’re moving there is 33 days, so I’m getting acquainted with the art scene there.)  His paintings are so compelling and have so much depth, they caught my eye right away.  He paints with all the tried and trued traditional elements, but isn’t afraid to add a bit of conventionalism (like the gorgeous dark running/dripping paint over the gold under-painting in corner of the painting above, and the exceptionally thick brushstrokes, and smears of paint placed strategically in the composition).  I also really admire Joshua’s color selection and use of deep dark paint.  He paints with purpose, and the end result is amazing.

Aren’t these city scenes great? I love the sense of motion and the gleaming light Joshua was able to achieve.  I feel like I could walk right into these scenes!

Life is not still.

“A piece of fruit ripens and withers over time, even after its plucked from a tree; so it is changing in front of our very eyes, like humans. An apple lives, dies, embodies centuries old symbolic ideas, and has been a mainstay in still-lifes as long as painting has been around.
